The Masthead Race Sunday August 22, 2010

Every year, the Masthead Cove Yacht Club hosts The Masthead Race in memory of our past commodore, Carol Marcincuk. After the race there is an award ceremony, party and raffles.  All proceeds from the day go to benefit a fund established in Carol's name for ovarian cancer research at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (where she was formerly employed). For over a decade, MCYC has sponsored this event to support charities with a special connection to our club and its membership. Carol was an active member of Masthead Cove, serving the club in many capacities (including as commodore) during her long tenure. In recognition of her service, she received both the Masthead  Award in 2000 (for dedication and service "above and beyond") and the Phil Dworkin Sportsmanship Award in 2003 (for outstanding contributions to the sport of sailing).

The Race - We encourage ALL local sailors to enter The Masthead Race. If you have never raced before, this is the perfect opportunity to start! Your participation will further the efforts of one of the most highly regarded biological research centers in the world for a cause that is near and dear. To encourage the participation of sailors new to racing, our race committee has instituted a policy to guide racers through the starting sequence via VHF radio. Also, longer courses with reaching legs (which favor cruising boats) are sailed.

The Party - After the race, EVERYONE (racers, MCYC members, or NOT) are invited to attend a party, location is TBD. This event typically runs from 3:00 to 6:00 PM on the day of the race (August 22nd). Please join us for an afternoon picnic with plenty of cold beer and soda. During the party we will auction-off prizes with the proceeds (and $15pp admission fee) going to the Marcincuk Fund. Each year through the generosity of club members, racers, friends, and local merchants we raise thousands of dollars for charity at this event; please help us make this year a smashing success!
